The Perils of Sectarian and Religious Pride on the Spiritual Path
The Leela
A friend of Kaka Mahajani, a staunch devotee of the Formless (Nirguna) God, wished to accompany Kaka to Shirdi. However, trapped in the rigidity of his beliefs, he laid down two strict conditions: 'I will not bow my head at Sai Baba's feet, and I will not give him any Dakshina.' He believed that as a worshipper of the Formless, bowing to a human form (Saguna) was beneath him. Kaka agreed, and they arrived in Shirdi.
When they climbed the steps of Dwarkamai, Baba ignored Kaka and fixed His gaze directly on the friend. In a tone that sent shivers through the man's soul, Baba said, > "Ka Yaave Ji." (Come, you are welcome).
This was not just a greeting. Baba spoke in the exact voice, style, and modulation of the man's deceased father. The friend was shaken to his core. The father who had merged into the Formless years ago was now standing before him in the Manifest Form of Sai. Overwhelmed by emotion and the shattering of his intellectual pride, the man who swore never to bow found himself weeping and falling at Baba's feet.
Later, Baba asked Kaka Mahajani for 17 rupees, not once but twice, ignoring the friend. Seeing this, the friend felt a pang of exclusion and jealousy. Finally, unable to resist, he offered 17 rupees himself. Baba then revealed, > "That feeling for Dakshina was not in your heart earlier, that is why I did not ask you. Now that you wish to give, I accept."
On their return journey, despite a terrifying storm, they traveled safely—first by tanga (Earth), then by boat (Water), and finally by train (Fire)—symbolizing the ascent through the elements under the Guru's protection.
? The Conflict / Doubt
Can a seeker attain the Ultimate Truth (Nirguna/Formless) while harboring Panthabhiman (Sectarian Pride) and rejecting the Grace of the Guru in Saguna (Manifest) form?
The Revelation
-
The Barrier of Pride: Baba demonstrates that sectarian pride is the "thorny forest" that prevents a seeker from reaching the "valleys of Kashmir" (Ultimate Truth). One cannot claim to know the Formless while being trapped in the arrogance of the intellect.
-
The Mystery of 17 Rupees: The Dakshina was never about money. Baba clarifies that to enter the realm of the Formless, one must first surrender 17 specific elements:
- The 5 Senses of Action (Karmendriya)
- The 5 Senses of Knowledge (Gyanendriya)
- The 5 Vital Airs (Pancha Prana)
- The Mind (Manas)
- The Intellect (Buddhi)
"First, give the 17 rupees! ... Until and unless you don't surrender these 17 things, how is that state of worship even possible?"
-
Saguna to Nirguna: The story proves that one cannot bypass the Guru. Just as the friend had to traverse Earth, Water, and Fire (the train) to reach safety, a devotee must pass through the worship of the Manifest (Saguna) to truly understand the Unmanifest (Nirguna).
-
Tearing Down the Wall: Baba’s final advice to the seeker was to dissolve the duality that separates the devotee from the Divine:
"The wall of separation between you and Me, tear it down completely. Then the path will be clear for us to meet each other."
