The Hidden Treasure of the Nine Coins: Unlocking the Nine Divine Virtues
The Leela
In the sacred precincts of Dwarkamai, a poignant exchange took place that would echo through the annals of spiritual history. As Sai Baba prepared to conclude His earthly incarnation, He did not leave behind gold, property, or a throne. Instead, He waited for the simple bhakri (bread) of His devoted servant, Laxmibai Shinde. While others brought offerings on silver and golden plates, Baba refused them, His eyes fixed on the arrival of true devotion.
When Laxmibai finally arrived, Baba accepted her offering with love. In return, He gave her something profound—nine coins. He did not give them all at once; first, He placed five coins in her hand, and then He added four more. To the onlooker, it was a simple gift of alms to a poor woman. But in the spiritual realm, it was a transmission of the highest wisdom. These were not mere pieces of metal to be worshiped in a shrine; they were a cryptic map to the ultimate state of discipleship, signifying the nine essential qualities that a seeker must cultivate to be truly worthy of the Guru's grace.
? The Conflict / Doubt
We often rush to take darshan of these physical coins, believing that merely seeing them brings blessings or luck. But Baba poses a challenging question: If these coins fall into your hands, yet your heart remains empty of the virtues they represent, what have you truly gained? Are we turning the Guru's grace into a transaction—giving one rupee to get a hundred back—or are we willing to dig for the real treasure hidden beneath the surface?
The Revelation
Baba's gift was never about money; it was a symbolic instruction on the Nine Characteristics of a True Disciple, as echoed in the Eknathi Bhagwat. To receive the Guru's real treasure, one must cultivate these specific internal states:
- 1. Amaani (Humility): Total absence of the desire for respect. One must treat praise and insult as 'rubbish.' If you crave respect, the seed of disrespect remains within you, making you vulnerable to pain.
- 2. Daksh (Alertness): Spiritual vigilance. It is the efficiency to prioritize what is most important in every fleeting moment, knowing that time cannot be extended.
- 3. Nirmatsar (Freedom from Envy): A heart free of hatred. Even if someone harms you, you must not harbor enmity. Surrender to them if necessary to clear the air, but never let jealousy take root.
- 4. Nirmam (Detachment): Being 'untouched' by attachment. One may possess wealth, family, and status, but like a lotus leaf in water, the mind must remain unattached, fully aware of the impermanence of all things.
- 5. Gurusevapar (Service to Guru): True service is not flattery or golden crowns. It is understanding the Guru's will without a word being spoken. It is aligning one's life so completely with the Master that external commands are unnecessary.
- 6. Thirst for Truth (Asava Paramaarthjinyasu): An intense, dying curiosity for the Supreme Truth. The disciple lives and dies only for this realization.
- 7. Unwavering Inner Kingdom: Stability of mind. Whether facing a storm or a celebration, the internal state remains neutral and unchanged.
- 8. Absence of Jealousy (Jai Thavi Nahin Asuya): In the spiritual world, envy is often rampant. A true disciple pushes others toward the light rather than hoarding followers. If someone else shines brighter, a true devotee rejoices.
- 9. Economy of Speech: Not wasting energy on gossip or praise. Words should be spent as carefully as diamonds, spoken only where they are valued.
Baba lamented that people came to Him only for worldly gain:
"What do I want to give you and what are you asking from me? I have come to distribute gems and pearls, and you stand before me to collect stones... I say, bring carts, dig and take away, but there is no one in this universe who is willing to work hard for knowledge."
The promise that "If you give one, I give hundred" was not a financial gamble but a spiritual covenant: If you offer Baba one virtue, He will multiply it into a hundredfold spiritual growth.
